In 1938, people had no fears of ghosts. This was the Great Depression. Fear was empty pockets and empty stomachs, but for the men of Jardonn Smith's Green River, working a Highway 66 project in the WPA meant a full-time job and steady wages. Sure, there's a ghost living under the river bridge near their camp, but the only question they have is, "Who's willie will he go for next?"

GREEN RIVER, CITY OF EMERALDS CANDLE
Cecil led the way, followed by Forrest, while Jack and I flanked Raymond in case he lost balance. Once he was safely across, he left the water and found a boulder fallen from the bluffs above, used it for his seat and began his sketching of us. Ray soon indicated he had our image stored in his brain, and so we scattered and swam, floated, or simply stood quietly absorbing the beauty all around us.
“What do you think, Uncle Jack? Ain't this a glorious spot?”
“It certainly is, Ernest. This is one fine river. Water's refreshing as it can be.”
“This is a better swimming hole than down at the camp,” Forrest joined us. “Just look at those bluffs to the west.” He removed his hat, took out half a cigar and book of matches from its inner headband. “Sunshine on the moss makes them look like skyscrapers.”
“Green skyscrapers?” I joked.
He fired up his stogie. ”Emerald. Like jeweled towers of a great city.” (Excerpt from Green River)
